US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Los Osos, California, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on January 14, 2011, by Chief US District Judge Karen E. Schreier. Zuya W. Thunder Hawk, age 25, was sentenced to five years of probation, a special assessment of $100 to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $29,643.19.
Thunder Hawk was indicted for failing to pay over $25,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on April 7, 2010. Defendant was ordered by the First Judicial Circuit, Clay County, South Dakota, to pay $412 per month for his minor child, commencing September 1, 2005. At the time of indictment, he had not made a child support payment since November 2006, and the total arrearage amount was $25,873.19. He pled guilty to the charge on October 1, 2010.
This case was investigated the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorney Thomas J. Wright prosecuted the case.
